Understand Your Gynecologic Surgery Options
Gynecologic Conditions
The gynecology specialty focuses on conditions affecting the internal female reproductive system, including the uterus (womb), ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. Problems with these organs can impact your health and overall quality of life.
Common gynecologic conditions—such as severe pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, abnormal bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse, and cancer—often require medical attention. If lifestyle changes, medications, or other non-surgical approaches do not relieve symptoms, your doctor may recommend surgery.
Types of Surgery
In the past, surgeons relied on open surgery, which requires large incisions to access internal organs. While open surgery is still performed today, many gynecologic procedures can now be done using minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery—potentially with da Vinci® technology.
Minimally invasive surgery uses one or a few small incisions through which surgical instruments and a camera are inserted. In laparoscopic surgery, surgeons use long-handled tools while viewing magnified images on a screen.
What Is a da Vinci Surgical System?
The da Vinci surgical system includes three key components: the surgeon console, the patient-side cart, and the vision cart.
Surgeon Console
The surgeon sits at the console during the procedure and views the surgical site in 3DHD. They control tiny, wristed instruments that mimic the movements of the human hand but with greater range of motion.
Patient-Side Cart
Positioned near the patient, this cart holds the instruments that perform the surgery. The instruments respond in real time to the surgeon’s movements at the console.
Vision Cart
This component supports communication between system parts and provides a view of the procedure for the surgical team.
Note: Intuitive does not provide medical advice. After reviewing all treatment options, only you and your doctor can determine if surgery using da Vinci technology is right for your situation. Always ask your surgeon about their training, experience, and outcomes.

Disclosures and Important Safety Information
Important Safety Information
Patients should talk to their doctors to determine if da Vinci® surgery is appropriate for their needs. All surgical and non-surgical options and associated risks should be reviewed to make an informed decision.
Like any surgery, da Vinci procedures involve risks, including serious complications or death. These may include injury to tissues and organs, or conversion to an open procedure, which could result in longer surgery and increased risks. For complete safety information, please visit www.intuitive.com/safety.
Individual outcomes may vary based on factors such as patient health, condition severity, and surgeon experience.
Da Vinci Xi® System Precaution Statement
The safety and effectiveness of this device for the procedures listed were evaluated as a surgical tool and did not include outcomes such as cancer survival rates. All use should be based on the judgment of a properly trained surgeon.
Medical Advice and Finding a Surgeon
Only your doctor can determine whether da Vinci surgery is appropriate for your condition. Surgeons trained in using the da Vinci system can be found using the Surgeon Locator. While Intuitive Surgical provides training, it does not certify or credential individual surgeons.
